My Honest Opinion!
It doesnt matter what a thief does with stolen property,no matter how nicely packaged.
As such Maryam Babangida's motives for setting up the BLP must be thoroughly scrutinized. Self aggrandizement? Conniving distraction? A way to escape the boredom that arose from her husband's intention to stay indefinitely in Aso rock? What was the exit strategy for the BLP? What was the Continuity plan? What was the long term vision?
It was simply a fad - you see!
Also the Ibo have a saying that he who enjoys the loot with a thief is equally a thief. Babangida's motive for grabbing power in 1985 in hindsight is now clear to all and sundry. He had no plan,no principle, nor vision -hence the dilly-dallying experimentalism that characterised his regime (Maradona style)
Moreover we all know that Govt(sorry IBB's GANG) democratized corruption in Nigeria, grossly eroding & inverting the moral scale in such a terrible way that we may not be able to recover in 50 years. The moral crisis that we face today is 90% attributable to the feudal crony-ism & favoritism exploited by the evil genius to perpetuate his grip on power.... See More
I am a living witness. I can never forget how as a young person growing up (just like millions of others) under parents who were well educated , hardworking and principled, I saw severe hardships fall upon my family due to the bastardization of all decent values - hard work, professionalism and honour.
IBB , his wife, fellow political soldiers and their civilian cronies unleashed a reign of looting, self enrichment; neglecting or usurping resources meant for rewarding hard-working professionals like my parents. They practically eliminated the middle class in Nigeria. So in conclusion I refuse to forget those very tough days in the University where my parents struggled to support three of us in the University because their salaries were not paid for months, while idiots and nonentities flaunted their suddenly acquired wealth in complete flagrance of all sense of decency. When I hear the name Babangida, this is all that comes to my mind -Corruption, corruption and more corruption. The worst part of the story is that the man has no shame or sense of propriety. If he ventures to come out to contest the Presidency again in future, I will not be surprised if he wins (afterall our institutions are weak, our Govt executives are mercenenaries for sale and our people have pitifully SHORT memories), but then I will also finally give up hope COMPLETELY about Nigeria and Nigerians. How can we make any progress if we are not able to remember; to differentiate between whats good and whats bad for us as a people? - Ben

Well written. The only thing I would have taken out is the sympathy expressed over her death and the condolence to her family. I thought their stolen billions should have been enough to bribe her away from death. Ndi Ara!!! - Nnamdi
